JIS celebrates success in UKMT Junior Maths Challenge

Jerudong International School (JIS) is proud to celebrate the achievements of 107 students who recently took part in the prestigious United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Junior Maths Challenge (JMC). Open to students aged 11 to 13, the JMC consists of 25 non-calculator, multiple-choice questions designed to assess mathematical reasoning, creativity and logic under timed conditions. The UKMT challenges are internationally recognised for encouraging young people to explore and enjoy mathematical thinking beyond the classroom. 

 

The school is pleased to announce that nine students were awarded Gold certificates: Maherah Najmina binti Ahmad Fahruddeen, Felix Fang, Ella Henderson, Maya Kamelia binti Kamal, Jemima Lai, Moaaz Owais, Ruhaan Rahaman, Haziq Azizi Khairul Sabrin and Gregory Tan. Year 8 student Haziq Sabrin was recognised as Best in School, while Year 7 student Moaaz Owais received Best in Year 7.

 

Nineteen students earned Silver certificates: Muaaz Ahmad, Dk Farah Pg Asreza, Merrilees Belcher, Danniel Chan, Azim Damit, Isa Aiman Edzwan Zukri, Ak Nik Ihsan Bin Pg Adli Firdaus, Alexander Lim, Damien Lim, Sophie Lim, Nathaniel Sim, Md Ehsan Na'eem Shahrul Amirul Iqbal, Haris Sheikh, Muhammad Ozil Khalifa bin Muhammad Syukri Nur, Matthias Narcis, Cedric Ong, Shikha Rai, Alyaa Thuraiya Md Yusreza and Declan Lim. Year 5 student Alexander Lim was named Best in Year 5, which is an exceptional accomplishment at his age.

 

Thirty Bronze certificates were also awarded: Aqil Syafiee' Abu Syahmi, Ameer Abdul Muezz bin Mohamad Amiruddin, James Beswick, Jonah Cunningham, Isaac Donald, Phoebe England, Felix Fang, Denise Foo, Coralie Han, Nurul Lily Jasmine binti Hj Mohamad Noh, Thu Thu Lynn Htet, Anusri Jadhav, Lisa Keasberry, Oliver Kelly, Michael Kristanto, Mahanth Karthikeyan Balasubramani, Kayli Lai, Isaac Lee, Jedd Lien, Isa Mashoof, Noorussyifa az-Zahra Muhd Norfauzi, Ak Najib Aqeel Pg Dr Noor Azmi, Gabriel Parayno, Syifa Syahira binti Sahari, Nur Danisha Izzati Hj Sahminan, Charlotte Skinner, Ella Trow, Claryse Yeo, Ak Md Aneeq Arsyad Pg Malik Yusri and Zayyan Muhammad Sharique Zayyan Ismawi.

 

Furthermore, forty-nine Participation awards were also given, reflecting the strength and enthusiasm of our student body.

 

Top performers were invited to take part in the Junior Kangaroo Challenge, an advanced follow-on round that builds on the problem-solving rigour of the JMC. Haziq Sabrin continued his strong performance by securing a Gold certificate, while Alexander Lim earned Silver. Bronze certificates were awarded to Year 8 students Felix Fang and Ella Henderson. Year 7 student Nathaniel Sim also participated with distinction.

 

As organiser Mr. Phil May explained, "At JIS, we place huge value on helping students grow into confident, independent thinkers. These competitions challenge students not only to recall knowledge but to apply it in new, often surprising ways. This is exactly the kind of learning that builds resilience and a love for problem solving. We are incredibly proud of every student who gave this challenge a go."
